Fish!

without comments

So one of my resolutions this year was to “be able to actually catch stuff when I go fishing”.  This is one of the resolutions that I made that I had absolutely no control over the outcome of whatsoever, as John has assured me that fishing is about 15% skill (choosing the right bait/spinners, knowing how to cast, etc) and about 100% pure dumb luck.

Last Sunday we went fishing at Caesar Creek Reservoir, and I managed to pull in three good-sized bluegills in the space of about 10 minutes using a minnow spinner.  That is about 300% better then I did all last season.

Of course, after that streak, I was back to my usual casting practice and drowning worms for the rest of the fishing trip.

But hey!  I still caught three fish!

We weighed them on the kitchen scale when we got home, and they were each just under a half-pound.

We breaded them and pan fried them up and had them for lunch.

Yum.

In which I recall the events of Memorial Day weekend

without comments

I really ought to mention Memorial Day weekend at some point, because a lot happened that weekend.

The first high point: 2nd wedding anniversary, for which John and I went out to dinner at The Melting Pot.  Mmmm… fondue.  Yummy things dunked in melted cheese….

The other high point of Memorial Day weekend: awesome fighting (fencing) at Crown.

I got to fight a lot of really awesome people, and had some people that I really respect a lot praise my skill.  Yes, John says that I am doing well all of the time (though he is somewhat biased in my favor) and I know that I am no slouch when it comes to German two-handers, but praise coming from some pretty high-ranked fencers who I respect a great deal is something completely else.  It certainly re-confirmed my resolve to continue to study Liechtenauer.

The very definite low point of Memorial Day weekend: plumbing problems.

Sunday morning I was doing some handwashing at the kitchen sink and realized that I was standing in a puddle.  My initial reaction was to think that I must have splashed some water out of the sink and to mop it up.  A few minutes after that I was standing in another puddle.  A few minutes after that of frantically pulling soaked cleaning supplies out from underneath the sink, John and I were able to tell that the garbage disposal unit was leaking rather badly.

So, off to Home Depot to get a new garbage disposal.  (Leaving a system of fans in place in the kitchen to dry out the sopping wet under-sink area before attempting repairs.)

One day later and the area under the sink is dry and John replaces the garbage disposal.  And it works just fine and is not spraying water like the old one was.  But, wait.  Is that another leak off of the hose for the faucet?  Why, yes it is!  Back to Home Depot (a couple of more times) for more pieces and parts.

And then a few days later the oven (or rather the ignition switch) gave up the ghost as well.  John managed to repair that one as well.  Hopefully that will be the last of the major home repairs that we need for a while.
